I. Introduction

In my research as a philosopher, one thing I have discovered is that human beings tend to deceive themselves about all sorts of things: themselves, other people, the world around them, the future, and even their past. Some people do not think this is a problem; to the contrary, they might even think it is desirable.1 However, as I try to show in this article, self-deception — despite the comfort that, admittedly, might offer to someone in the short-term — can be detrimental to one's well-being as well as the society at large.
